Monasteries of Fruska Gora

The area is home to 17 Serb Orthodox monasteries built between the 15th and 18th centuries. A good architectural example is Jazak Monastery founded in 1736.

King Stefan Uros V (« Uros the Weak ») is buried in the church : he was co-regent of the Serbian Empire (1346-1355) together with his father and later became Tsar (1355-1371).

Sremski Karlovci

Key monuments of the Baroque town centre are spread around the Main Square (Trg Branka Radicevica), with the « Four Lions » fountain (1799) in the middle : St Nikola’s Orthodox Church (1762), the Roman Catholic Church, the Patriarch’s Palace (seat of the bishop of Srem), the Orthodox Seminary (1749), the Gymnasium (1749), Stefaneum Palace (1903) and the Town Hall.

In 1817 the Peace Chapel was built on a hill outside of town where the Karlovac Peace Treaty was signed in 1699 between the Christian Alliance (Austria, Poland, Venice and Russia) and Turkey.

It was the first time that a round table was used for the negotiations and the chapel has four side doors, one for each of the Alliance members.

All these places and sites can make a fantastic trip through the charming region of Vojvodina.

Make it your next holiday destination !
