Sremska Mitrovica (ancient SIRMIUM)
Built between the 1st and 4th century A.D., Sirmium was a large Roman metropolis and a seat of early Christianity.
Housed under a modern structure, remains of the old city with its Imperial Palace and mosaic-floored villas give an idea of its former glory.
The present-day city is dotted with numerous memories of the past, including the ruins of a Christian Basilica.
Natural Reserve Zasavica
This lovely nature park near Sremska Mitrovica, protected since 1997, covers 1825 hectares. It is set on aquatic and wetland ecosystems, flooded forests and canals of the Zasavica river connected with the Sava river (boat trip highly recommended !).
It has abundant and diverse wildlife, a watchtower to enjoy the scenery and a mini zoo featuring local animals, including the unique and famous mangulica pig with its low-cholesterol fat content.
A bar-restaurant and camping ground are also at the disposal of visitors.
